Eduardo Esper, M.D., FACS, FCCP
Dr. Esper is a Board Certified Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgeon who came to Terre Haute in July of 2003. He graduated in 1997 from the University of Chicago in Chicago, IL. Dr. Esper brings to Terre Haute innovative modern technology in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, including off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery. This procedure permits complete revascularization of the beating heart without the need for cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary bypass. He has extensive experience in mitral valve repair, thoracoscopy surgery, thoracic oncology, vascular and endovascular surgery. In addition, Dr. Esper was the first surgeon in the state of Indiana to perform a minimally invasive procedure to treat atrial fibrillation using radiofrequency ablation techniques.
Dr. Esper graduated from medical school at the University of EL Rosario in Bogota, Colombia. He came to the University of Minnesota in 1983 where he spent over 5 years in cardiovascular research and lipid metabolism. He trained in General Surgery and obtained his degree from Temple University School of Medicine before becoming a Cardiothoracic Surgeon. He is the first author of over 30 publications in basic science and clinical research as well as many abstract presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Esper received several recognition awards for his publications. In 1996, he was awarded the most outstanding house staff research award at the Charles Huggins research conference of the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine.
Dr. Esper has 5 children. He is married to Heather R. Esper, a native of St. John, IN, and a graduate of Purdue University School of Nursing. He and his wife enjoy playing tennis, gathering with friends, and quality time with their children.
